The day after the Banzai Attack on the 1st Battalion 6th Marines line, 1/6 is pulled off the line and sent back to Green beach for rest. In its place, is 3rd battalion of the 6th Marines. They are ordered to move from their front to the east and seize Takarongo Point which held the remaining two 8 inch Vickers Guns facing out to open sea and to clear the remaining Japanese from the island. At the same time, 1/8 is sent to reduce the pocket on Red Beach 2. By 3 oclock in the afternoon of November 23rd, 1943 the fighting was all over. The Japanese garrison had fought to the last man and the vast majority of prisoners taken during the battle had been Korean laborers. Keiji Shibazaki, the commander for the Japanese garrison Betio had once boasted that a million men could not take Tarawa in a hundred years. The 2nd Marine Division took the island in 76 hours but at great cost. Almost four thousand Americans had died and nearly 5 thousand Japanese and Koreans had died. 40% of whom had died in the pre naval bombardment including the Japanese command staff. The Battle of Tarawa had taught harsh lessons about an opposed assault on a fortified island. Its lessons would be applied to every other battle in the Pacific Theater that came after it.
