The morning after the Banzai Attack, the Marines of 1st Battalion 8th Marines begin their final attack on a small isolated pocket of Japanese resistance between Red Beach 1 and Red Beach 2. From the air, the island of Betio appeared as a perched bird with its beak at Red Beach 1 and its tail at Takarongo Point. This image gave the spot joining Red Beach 1 and Red Beach 2 the nickname of “The Bird’s Throat”. The had been fighting to reduce this pocket of isolated Japanese for days but had not been able to move against it. At 9 am, the attack was commenced and by noon the pocket had been reduced. The Japanese in the pocket fought to the last man.
