The Banzai Attack [Mission]

After the Marines of 1/6 and 2/8 linked up east of the airfield on the afternoon of November 22nd, 1943, they forged a continuous line from Black Beach 2 in the south to Red Beach 3 in the north with their front facing east along a Y shaped, deep Anti Tank Ditch that spanned the width of the island. It was here they were to hold and await further orders for the final push to seize the remaining 8 inch guns and eastern tip of the island at Takarongo Point. At 11 oclock the Japanese began a series of infiltrations and counterattacks along the American line. At 4 AM on November 23rd however came a large scale Banzai Attack with the aim of driving the Americans back to the invasion beaches to the west. In the ensuing hour long battle, US Navy Destroyers USS Sigsbee and USS Shroeder pummel the oncoming Japanese attackers with their main guns as Marine mortar and artillery fire from the 10th Marines 75mm Pack Howitzers on Red Beach 3 halt the attack. In the hour long battle over 140 US Marines are killed and over 300 Japanese are killed. The ferocity of the attack took many on the Marine command staff by surprise. The bulk of the attack had slammed into 1st battalion, 6th Marines front and they had suffered the bulk of the casualties. By morning, the men of 1/6 had been pulled off the line for rest and were replaced by 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. It was to be their task to finally advance down to the eastern tip of the island and seize Takarongo Point.
