Sendai Subway 3000 Series / 仙台市交通局3000系

The 3000 Series (3000系) is a commuter EMU introduced for the Namboku Line in 2024.

Entering commercial service on the 24th of October 2024, the 3000 series will replace the 1000 series in service since the line’s opening in 1987. These trains are constructed with corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy, using Hitachi’s double skin structure (similar to the A-train platform). Like the 1000 series, the leading cars are 1.75m longer to fit the drivers cab while leaving the passenger cabin identical to middle cars. The exterior design is a simple and clean style positioned as an evolution to the 1000 series, selected through a public vote among two other candidates. Numerous improvements were made to the interior, including free spaces in each car, and an increase in air conditioning capacity of 50%. In addition, the vehicle floor had been lowered by 4 centimetres, reducing the height difference between the train and the platform to 2cm, the horizontal gap was also lowered to 3cm to improve accessibility. A total of 22 sets are planned to be introduced in the 3000 series, replacing the entire existing 1000 series fleet by 2030. All sets will be manufactured as 4 car formations, with later extensions to 6 cars supported. Only 1 set (3131F) have entered service so far.
