Categories, now with organized specificity. A remake of a prior, older mod in 2022 made for candlelightSunset, updated to the latest stable content 41.78.16 and unstable 42.00.00. You may think of it as an updated fork to the-yet-to-be-updated Better Sorting.

Examples of remodeled categories:
Weapon - Axe
Weapon - Firearm (9x19mm)
Food - Perishable - Vegetable
Cooking - Utensil
Medical - First Aid
Entertainment - Instrument
Clothing - Outerwear
Character - Hair
Furniture - Decorative
... and so on

Build 42 support is at item parity but categories are not yet final pending more research, updates and investigation for real-world use of most items.

Hmm... I had been working on a Vanilla Foods Expanded patch for a bit for Better Sorting, and while looking around to find out why certain things don't translate I found this much more updated (and specific!) mod to swap to. Definitely and improvement, and when you sort by category they still sort alphabetically so it goes Class -> Category -> Subcategory. Excellent stuff.

I'd love to contribute the VFX patch I was working on, unfortunately it's only subdivided as far as Perishable, Non-Perishable, Beverage, and Alcohol, so I'll have to look over the categories here and consider if it's worth the work. It's about 1400 items.

Could support for Vanilla Foods Expanded be added? This might be a bit rude to request, as it is a very large workload. But precisely because it has so much content, the current mod classification seems to be somewhat ineffective.

Thank you for the report, this is fixed at this time. Everyone: be advised that a lot of mods which interact with items through scripting have been broken by 42.12 in general, so I will suggest that everyone debug their save files mod by mod so to be able to report the right bugs to the right mods.

It doesn’t seem to be compatible with the Smart Radial Menu mod. That menu display method appears to use the original vanilla categories, and I think that’s where the issue is coming from.

@汉太祖, Hmm, I will take a look at it once I have a chance. It is plausible if not the expected behavior for another mod to be looking for a specific DisplayCategory in its script logic that could in theory be overwritten by my mod and therefore break for that reason. I haven't seen this previously (since Project Zomboid fortunately separates an item's actual, used by the game "category" versus its DisplayCategory) but that would be why if it was causing an issue.
