Green Beach [Mission]

Map: Betio, Tarawa Atoll 1943 - 11/21/1943

November 21st, late in the day. The 1st battalion, 6th Marine Regiment lands on Green Beach which had been secured only that morning by the remnants of the 2nd Marines who managed to take the big guns on the western side of the island. The 6th Marines land totally unopposed and are able to land the entire battalion without trouble. This would prove to be a major turning point in the campaign as before this, almost all of the landings had suffered very heavy casualties. By the end of the day, the 6th Marines had pushed all the way to the southern shore and had begun to push east away from the airfield.
