November 21st, 1943. Day 2 of the Battle of Tarawa. After a long hard fought fight the previous day, the remnants of 1 / 2, 2/2 and 3/2 assemble together under the temporary command of Major Michael P. Ryan as a makeshift force that would be come to be known as “Ryan’s Orphans” or “The Major Ryan Group”. Together with tank support and naval gunfire they would drive south from Red Beach 1 and cleared the Japanese from Green Beach and seized Temakin Point where the large British Vickers Guns were located that the Japanese government had purchased years before. Later that day, the 6th Marine Regiment would land on Green Beach and push east across the airfield and begin their push to Takarongo Point.
