On the afternoon of November 20th, the Marines of 2/2, 2/8 and 3/8 are pushing inland from Red Beaches 2 and 3 and face extremely persistent resistance from Japanese troops dug into a series of hardpoints on the islands interior. What follows is a brutal battle with the Marines attacking from their beacheads on Red 2 and 3 in the north to the south end of the island at the unused Black Beaches. On the night of November 20th the Marine’s had secured half of the airfield and were stopped just short of the main runway. By the night of November 21st the Marines had bisected the islands defenses and taken much of the airfield. The Japanese defenses in the western and eastern sides of the island were now cut off from each other and had been pushed into a series of pockets on Red Beach 2 and Red Beach 3.
