November 20th, 1943 Red Beach 3, the third invasion beach for the first day, here the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines face extremely heavy fire from the beach and far side of the wooden pier. The fighting around the wooden pier by 2/2 and 2/8 was fierce. Within hours, the Marines of 2/8 get hung up at the sea wall and the first of two Divisional Reserves are sent in to assist the initial landing points. The 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines would land in a later wave to reinforce the 2nd battalion, 8th Marines and together they would push inland towards the airfield. By nightfall on November 20th 2/2, 2/8 and 3/8 have moved half way across the island and have partially secured the airfield. On the night of November 21st, they had bisected the Japanese defenses on the island from the eastern and western sides of the island.
