Red Beach 1 [Mission]

November 20th, 1943. The first wave of the US Marine landing on the island of Tarawa has begun and the first landing is to take place at beach code named, Red 1 at just before 9:20 am. The first unit to land ashore was given to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines. Within minutes the Marines flounder and struggle to reach the seawall under the barrage of 75mm Anti Boat and AT guns as well as 13mm Machine Gun and dug in infantry and machine gun positions. Throught the course of the day, the Marines make small headway on the northern coast of Red Beach 1 that runs along Green Beach. Only one tank makes it ashore on Red Beach One, called “China Gal”. The Marines suffer very heavy casualties from dug in Japanese Imperial Marines, called “Special Naval Landing Force”. The Japanese commander Keiji Shibasaki had once boasted that it would take an invader a million men a hundred years to take his island. By November 23rd, the US Marines would do it in 76 hours.
