Maracaibo

Maracaibo is a lagoon lake in Venezuela. It is located in an intermontane tectonic basin between the Sierra de Perijá to the west and the Cordillera de Mérida to the south and east. The lake was named during the colonization period after a local leader named Mara, the second part - kaibo - means "land"; thus, the limnonym is translated as "Land of Mara".
Several villages built directly on the lake on stilts still exist in the southern and southwestern parts of the lake.
