Phong + Specular Soldiers (EP2)

描述
Both specular highlights and cubemap reflectivity of EP2 and original HL2 shading for Combine soldiers. This version overrides the soldier’s materials to always use their dirt covered EP2 versions so only enable it when playing EP2. Alternatively move and rename the .VPK of this addon into the ep2/custom folder.

Materials and textures adjusted to support both original pre-orangebox specular shading and the original EP2 phong shading.

HL2 version

Features:

  • HL2 and EP2 supported.
  • Uncompressed normal maps.
  • Enhanced shading.



Custom texture setup:

The normalmap's alpha channel is the phong mask. The original dedicated phong exponent texture is used. The diffuse texture alpha contains the specular envmap mask. The original dedicated selfillum mask texture is used.
The phong and specular vmts are then combined using this approach and the $envmaptint values are halved since phong doubles the intensity of the envmap otherwise.

To use custom textures, simply export the alpha channel of textures from this mod and replace the alpha channel of the custom textures. Then copy over the .vmt files from this mod.

There isn't a way to load separate assets for the different games on the Workshop. EP2 just replaced the default HL2 texture so I can't use a workshop addon to replace the texture for one game without replacing the other.
It shouldn't be too much of an issue to enable this when you want the EP2 dirt covered version.

This seems really neat, I feel like when Valve moved away from their retail 2004 shading methods which relied on a lot of cubemaps & the shader tech resembling Doom3 shaders, they kind of decided to leave a lot of materials very flatly shaded, matte, I'd honestly take the old overreliance on cubemaps and such than nothing at all. Hope you can do more, NPCs, props, materials etc.
