(BS) Njord-class Light Cruiser (modless)

The Njord-class Light Cruiser is a large grid warship by Black Sail, designed as forward command and support vessel. Despite its age and civilian roots of the design, these vessels were kept up to date with a versatile array of 25mm gatling turrets and 125mm artillery turrets to keep up with more modern designs. The vessels capabilities are further supported by their hangar bay and the ability to fly in the atmosphere of a planet. The ship is fully vanilla, uses NO DLC content and is survival ready.

Key Features:

• Survival-ready- The crafts spaceframe features pressurized rooms, airlocks, cargo- and oxygen-storage, production facilities and is fully conveyor-linked.
  
• Interplanetary capabilities- The ship has enough thrusters to counter natural gravity fields up to 1.00G and safely leave them, giving it the ability to fly in the atmosphere of almost every planet.
  
• Hangar Bay- The Njord features a hangar bay with four connector ports, giving the crew the ability to safely maintain or repair the docked utility and support crafts. The magnetic lock secures towed in salvage or SM’s.
  
• Emergency Cockpit - In case the CIC suffers severe damage the Njord can be controlled from an protected emergency cockpit behind the CIC, the observation bridge at the bow or the dorsal flight bridge.
  
• Script Backup - If one of the primary grid mounted programmable blocks gets destroyed, the vessel can utilize the timer controlled (“TB Script Backup”) to switch to the subgrid mounted ones of the main computer core.
  
• Repair System - Multiple repair welders at the turrets and fixed weapons are improving the ship’s ability of withstanding enemy fire while keeping its primary systems online. And a repair projector ensures the ability to recover from damage.

Originally designed as civilian exploration and survey vessels, these ships were extensively refitted by Black Sail and became the Njord-class, which features up-to-date weaponry and multiple new docking facilities to be better suited for their new career as forward command and support vessels in the ranks of Black Sail.

With a dry mass of 5350 metric tons, the Njord is a heavy warship. To maintain the ship’s ability to enter and fly in the atmosphere of a planet, the vessel only features light armour plating. This weakness is slightly countered by the repair projector and repair welders at the weapons.
Besides the armour the vessel kept a lot of its civilian features, including its four engine nacelles providing the Njord with up to 19,6 MN of thrust, which results in acceptable acceleration, while the 35 gyroscopes are giving the ship a solid manoeuvrability compared to other cruisers. In case of an emergency four parachute hatches are installed at the nacelles.
The reason why Black Sail used such a civilian design was the pressurized hangar bay, which offered great flexibility and allowed the large vessels to carry their own support and utility crafts. The four connector ports on both sides are divided by a maintenance trench to work under the docked ships. In the middle of the bay are magnetic holding plates, to secure Standard Modules or towed in cargo. The standard compliment usually consisted of small hydrogen powered drones, which were controlled by the vessels drone control station over the hangar bay.
Another unique feature carried over from the civilian past is the dorsal working deck giving the crew access to the flight bridge tower and antenna. The deck provides access to the dorsal broadside artillery and oxygen farms and is sometimes used for recreational purposes and speeches by the commander, when the ship is in atmosphere.

The armament of the Njord was kept up to date, featuring a modern anti-ship armament of twelve 125mm artillery turrets and nineteen 25mm gatling turrets supported by thirty-five 5,25mm Point Defence Cannons. The six bow-facing sequenced 200mm rocket launchers complete the armament, making the vessel a formidable foe for small and large enemy vessels.

Njord-class cruisers feature a spacious interior for a large crew compliment, including advanced medical equipment, production facilities, luxurious crew quarters, a laboratory and a shooting range. A CIC, with an armoured Emergency Bridge was added in the former cargo bay, serving as a redundancy to the exposed dorsal flight bridge and the observation bridge at the bow of the ship. The many maintenance ducts were kept as alternate ways to connect the interior and to repair vital systems. To cover the whole length of nearly two hundred metres, the ship has two gravity generators installed.

Besides their primary use as forward command vessels, mobile resupply posts, and drone control ships, Njord’s were also capable of being used as long-range exploration vessels and sometimes carried out special “diplomatic” missions, involving first contacts with other species. Most notably the diplomatic relations with the Sabiroids, which unfortunately were not interested in Space Credits, “neither in artillery” as the TEF press commented on the massacre.
