Raid at Tasimboko [Mission]

September 8th, 1942. The 1st Marine Raider Battalion lands at Taivu Point by using two ordinary fishing boats and two light cruisers to attack the main Japanese supply depot for what they thought was a small force of troops. Native scouts had reported however that a large force of Japanese soldiers had landed at Taivu Point and it looked as though that something big was building. Upon landing however, the Marines learned that the Native scouts had in fact been correct. Upon moving inland, they found that there had been a large troop presence in the area. Collectively Companies A, B and C move to outflank Tasimboko village and clear it as well as the surrounding jungle of Japanese. Defended by troops from 35th Infantry Brigade, Tasimboko village served as the main supply depot for Kawaguchi’s attack force. The Marine Raiders immediately destroy the supply dump and return to Lunga Point with their pockets laden with captured food, alcohol and information on enemy troop movements. The raid was a minor tactical victory but had far reaching consequences for the battle of Edson’s Ridge. When it came time for Kawaguchi to start his attack, he had to do so with no supply line whatsoever.
