Streamliner Series: Phoebe Snow Budd Observation

The Delware, Lackawanna & Western (DL&W) was a Class 1 railroad in Northeastern PA / Western NY. With a terminal in Hoboken, NJ, customers could ride in style along the Phoebe Snow train from there, across the famous Lackawanna Cutoff, to Buffalo NY. The Phoebe Snow was their premier service, lead by EMD E8s and tailed by a pair of Budd Tavern-Lounges.

In 1960, DL&W and Erie merged to become a succesful company for the period (especially compared to the devil Penn Central) and survived up until Hurricane Agnes wreaked havoc among the railroad and caused a sharp decline. Eventually in 1976 it was rolled into Conrail.

Built by Budd, these [obviously] saw service on the Phoebe Snow for DL&W/EL. Only 2 were built, #789 & 790. At some point after the Phoebe Snow service ended, these were sent to the Long Island RR, and then eventually made its way onto Metro North for their OCS.

At one point during the EL period, they were removed from the service much to the chagrin of the riders, however was brought back by the popular demand.
