The Battle of Alligator Creek [Mission]

August 21st, 1942. 1:30 am. The 28th Infantry Regiment of the Ichiki Detachment under Kiyonao Ichiki attacks the 1st Marine Regiment at Alligator Creek. It is the first major engagement of the Guadalcanal campaign. In the ensuing night battle, of the 917 man force, between 750 to 800 men are killed or wounded. Marine casualties were counted to be between 40 and 45 men killed and wounded. The Japanese attacked all night and even attempted to flank the Marine defenses at the beach by wading out into the ocean chest and neck deep. At some point during the battle, it is believed that Ichiki either died in one of the initial charges or committed suicide in the final stages of the battle.
