T-72A (object 172M-1; 1979) - modernization of the T-72 tank. Main differences: turret with combined armor, reinforced armor of the upper glacis plate, laser sight-rangefinder TPD-K1, gunner's night sight TPN-3-49 with illuminator L-4, solid side anti-cumulative screens, 2A46 gun (instead of 2A26M2 gun), 902B smoke grenade launch system, napalm protection system, road signaling system, driver's night vision device TVNE-4B, increased dynamic travel of rollers, V-46-6 engine. Since 1984, according to the Otrazhenie R&D project, an additional 30 mm thick steel plate was welded onto the upper glacis plate.
