Petrovsky stadium

Adds one large stadium to the game, and, separately, one tower with floodlights.



The first stadium on this site was built in 1924-1925 according to the design of the former football player of the «Sport» team, Czech Alois Osipovich Vejvoda. The first match took place on July 5, 1925 (Leningrad 5:1 Kharkov). But already in 1933, it was reconstructed: the turns of the concrete track were eliminated and wooden stands were erected, the capacity of the stands increased from 10,000 to 25,000 spectators. To commemorate this event, on July 14, 1933, the USSR national team entered the field of the Lenin Stadium for the only time in history. The match between the first and second USSR teams ended with the victory of the second team 2:0. Two weeks later, the stadium hosted its first international game - the Leningrad team hosted the Turkish team (2:2).

During the Great Patriotic War, the stadium was destroyed: part of the wooden stands burned down, the other part was dismantled for firewood by city residents in the harsh winter of 1942. The stone bowl of the stadium, however, was preserved. Only in 1957-1961, according to the design of architects N. V. Baranov, O. I. Guryev and V. M. Fromzel, the stadium was reconstructed. After the completion of the work, the capacity of the new stadium was 33,000 spectators. Thanks to the use of the synthetic surface «Novotan» for the running track, the stadium became one of the athletics centers of the country. In 1968, it hosted the Znamensky brothers' memorial for the first time, and in July 1970, the USSR - USA athletics match was held here. In addition to athletics competitions, in the 1960s-1980s, the Lenin Stadium hosted matches of the national rugby championship, bandy championship and field hockey championship. The stadium was also home to the Dynamo football team, which played in the lower leagues of the all-Union championship. In the late 1970s, before the 1980 Olympic Games, the stadium was reconstructed again (architects S.P. Odnovalov, N.D. Balazh, engineer M.E. Christiansen).
In 1992, the stadium was renamed «Petrovsky». In 1994, the stadium was renovated to host the Goodwill Games. The following year, plastic seats were installed in the stands, and the field was equipped with electric heating. Since 1994, it has been the home stadium of the Zenit club, and since 2017, it has been a reserve stadium. After Zenit moved to a new stadium on Krestovsky Island (youth teams also left the small arena), and the city was cleared of other football clubs, the further occupancy of the arena, which began to belong to the municipality, remained unclear. It was reported that the possibility of converting the stadium into an athletics complex did not find the proper response from government officials due to the unprofitability of the project. There was a possibility of demolishing the stadium and allocating the territory for commercial residential development.

Since 2019, the stadium has been prepared as a training ground for teams participating in the 2020 European Football Championship. The arena was also prepared for athletics competitions: the running tracks were updated, a high jump area, a long jump area, and a steeplechase pit were built. Preparations were underway for an inspection of the stadium's condition. In the future, it was planned to build a canopy over the spectator stands. In June 2023, an agreement was signed on reconstruction, which provides for the transformation of the stadium into a modern cultural and sports complex and the opening of a multifunctional public space next to it.
