Once per floor you can double-tap the map button (TAB) to spawn two portals that lead to unexplored special rooms, the portals remain in place until you change floors.
The chosen rooms are not random, it picks two unexplored rooms in this order.
(if in an XL floor it won't do 2 of the same room type)
Boss room
Treasure room
Shop
Secret room
Arcade
Library
Planetarium
Super Secret room
Dice Room
Vault
Ultra Secret room

If it can't find an unexplored room on the list in the current floor when spawning a portal the portal will link to the Black Market or to an I AM ERROR room.

So not only can it be used to find hidden rooms and access sealed rooms without needing keys or bombs, you can control which room it connects to based on how much of the floor you've explored.
