Meteorite Over Occultist

Overview

This mod replaces the mechanics of the Occultist class with those of an entirely new class, the Meteorite. This "preview build" was pasted over the Occultist for ease of development. The final version will occupy a new space on the hero roster and be complete with a new model, animations, effects, etc.

All skills, stats, unlocks, paths, trinkets, descriptions and barks, plus signature inn item, are already complete (barring potential balance updates). Icons are currently all placeholders (made in Paint), but they get the job done for the time being. Due to current limitations with DD2's modding tools, skill animations are missing many effects (though they're not supposed to be the Occultist's skills anyway). Also nothing related to Shrines of Reflection has been changed, so please use this mod with an Occultist that already has all his skills.

The Occultist was chosen due to being the closest analogue to the Meteorite in the official cast. (Also his unique token (Unchecked Power) has been renamed and repurposed.)


Content Details

Design intention: The Meteorite is a squishy backline support hero that emphasizes stability and teamwork. His poor stats and unreliable offense are offset by his wide variety of potent support options. The Meteorite isn't a particularly complicated class at surface level, but relies on coordination with his allies for optimal play. With a proper gameplan, he can feel like the ultimate support unit. Without one, he can feel practically useless.

One example of this reliance on coordination is that he has excellent uses for Combo tokens, but no means of applying them himself. (One of his paths inverts this, specializing in applying Combo but with no way to utilize it.)

Brief lore summary: Owen was experimented on by the Protégé during the events described in Confession 4. As a result, "the Meteorite" has a chunk of space rock lodged in his skull, which has mutated part of his head and neck, plus his left shoulder and arm. These mutations resemble the Cultists. Despite this destroying what was left of his former life, he now spends every waking moment wracked by guilt, believing that he likely contributed to bringing about the calamity that has befallen the planet. He rides with the Protégé and the other Heroes to try to right this wrong.

Owen is based on a character from a roleplay I was involved in some time ago. He fit surprisingly well in the world of DD2, inspiring me to create this mod.

Known Issues

THIS MOD HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED FOR COMPATIBILITY WITH KINGDOMS. It probably works in that mode, but you will likely see old Occultist barks and there may be other issues.

The display for the Meteorite's overall rank and targeting capabilities on his character tab does not always correctly reflect his equipped and/or moused-over skills. His tooltips are accurate, so trust those.

I keep seeing items in the Recollection at the Altar of Hope display as new on repeat visits.

Other than Kingdoms compatibility, these issues do not seem to be fixable with the modding tools currently available. Luckily they are quite minor.

This is probably also the best place to mention that I'm sure the Meteorite is not yet perfectly balanced. I did my best! But this sort of thing is always a work in progress, particularly with how little playtesting this mod was able to have before release. Please feel free to give me feedback regarding balance!


Next Steps

This is the part where I admit that this is pretty much as far as development of this mod is going to get without any codevelopers.

I'm neither a modeler nor an artist. Nor am I an animator. (Nor do I have any experience creating sound effects, though those can't even be implemented in DD2 mods as of yet.) I'm interested in commissioning (yes, paying) a modeler, an artist, et cetera, to help me bring the Meteorite fully to life. To inquire about this, please DM me on X (@GameTrekker).

I'm actually not even a programmer, so it's kind of a miracle that this mod was completed as efficiently as it was. As a result, I may also need help implementing the Meteorite as a new hero once the proper assets have been created, but that won't be relevant for some time. This is a fan work. Darkest Dungeon II is owned by Red Hook Studios. All files currently used by this mod that weren't sourced from the base game were created by myself, GameTrekker. I haven't played this hero yet, but I looked at the skills and it looks pretty damn cool. It's a really interesting combat support class that offers a wide range of buffs. I'm looking forward to Meteor being released as a separate class.
