Toronto West Detention Centre (formerly West Metro Detention Centre) was a maximum security prison in Toronto Ontario, Canada which opened in 1976 and was designed by "Moffat and Kinoshita Architects". The prison held prisoners who had been remanded into custody while awaiting trial or sentencing, were serving short sentences (2 years less a day), or were awaiting transfer to federal or provincial correctional facilities. The prison would be expanded in 1986 with a new 3 floor cell block added to the front of the complex. In 2014 Toronto West would be closed an its operations and inmates transferred to the new "Toronto South Detention Centre" with the building being torn down two years later in 2016. Today the former site of the prison remains empty with plans for a new Juvenile Detention Centre to one day be built on the land.
