Kyoto Municipal Subway 10 Series / 京都市交通局10系

The 10 Series (10系) is a commuter EMU operated by Kyoto Municipal Subway since 1981.

Produced for the opening of the Karasuma Line, the 10 series is Kyoto Municipal Subway's first vehicle type. It is a standard design commuter train with an aluminum body, and the interior has long seating typical of subway cars. Several batches were produced between 1980 and 1997, as additional vehicles were required for the Karasuma Line's several extensions. The first batch was produced as 4 car sets, but later extended to 6 cars, all later manufactured vehicles were arranged in 6 car sets. There are minor visual and cabin equipment changes across the fleet, but no major difference in specifications. The total number of cars produced is 120 across all sub-variants. There were plans to extend the series to 8-car formations, although this never materialized. A number of refurbishment works were carried out on the 10 series in the 2000s, these updated the control system and replaced the motors. Since 2021, the newly introduced 20 series will replace the oldest batch of the 10 series, which began to be scrapped the same year. As of current, 84 cars remain in operation, although the number is likely in decrease in the coming years.
