JR Shikoku 7200 Series / JR四国7200系

The 7200 Series is a commuter type EMU operated by JR Shikoku.

Produced by JNR in 1986 as the 121 series, this type entered operation the following year with the electrification of parts of the Yosan and Dosan main lines (The "Main Line" designation was dropped by JR Shikoku across it's network in 1988). 38 cars were manufactured by JNR, all arranged in 2-car sets. These vehicles were one of the types introduced for JR Shikoku to improve their financial sustainability after privatisation, the electrification and various other improvement works completed during this period also served the same purpose. The lightweight stainless steel car body was manufactured new, but equipment was reused from older types to reduce costs. From 2016-2019, all cars underwent significant renovation works, and renewed vehicles were reclassified as the 7200 series of JR Shikoku. The control equipment, motors, and bogies were all replaced with newer models, while each car's weight had also been reduced. After the modification, it also became possible to operate jointly with the 7000 series, as the top speed, acceleration, and braking performance were made to be equivalent. The interior cabin had also been refreshed, with some box seats replaced with long seats, although the overall layout remains a semi-cross configuration. All 38 cars are in service, and operates across JR Shikoku's electrified network except the Seto-Ohashi Line.
