Kyoto Municipal Subway 20 Series / 京都市交通局20系

The 20 Series (20系) is a commuter EMU operated by Kyoto Municipal Subway since 2022.

This type is the second generation of trains on the Karasuma Line, produced to replace the earlier batches of the 10 series, which had been in service since 1981. The overarching theme of the design was decided by public vote, with a "futuristic design with rounded edges" selected for the exterior, while bright colors was selected for the interior. The front car is somewhat reminiscent of the newest Tokyo Metro types, and the seats are in the bright green color of the Karasuma Line. 36 cars have been produced to date arranged in 6-car trains, while another 3 sets are on order. The type operates on the Karasuma Line and some through services onto Kintetsu's Kyoto and Nara Lines. The top speed of the train is 105km/h, which is the top speeds on the above-ground Kintetsu lines. A potential future extension to 8 car sets have been considered in the design, although there are no concrete plans for implementation yet.
