Niigata Transys NDC / 新潟トランシス NDC

The NDC is a series of single car DMUs operated by various railway companies primarily on rural lines.

Under the JNR Reconstruction Act of 1980, rural lines with poor ridership were discontinued across the country from 1983 to 1990. Local municipalities often opposed the closure of railways, and many elected to set up locally owned companies to succeed JNR/JR operations. The NDC is a lightweight and inexpensive diesel railcar intended for these newly created third sector companies, which lacked the resources to independently design their own vehicles. It was manufactured by Niigata Iron Works from 1985 to 2001. The length of these cars ranged from 14.3m to 21.3m, although models smaller than 18m have been largely discontinued. In 2001, Niigata Transys purchased the NDC program and have continued production and modernisation of the series. The company has also consolidated a number of similar types originally produced by other companies, such as Fuji Heavy Industry's LE-Car and LE-DC series. JR Companies have also ordered derivatives of NDC vehicles, such as the KiHa 120 series of JR West and KiHa 11 series of JR Central. The total number of vehicles is not clear as cars ordered by different companies are considered legally distinct types, although a very high percentage of third sector owned vehicles are NDC variants.
