JR Kyushu 813 Series / JR九州813系

The 813 Series (813系) is a commuter type EMU operated by JR Kyushu since 1994.

The first VVVF controlled train designed by JR Kyushu, the 813 series is a common type across the busier electrified lines on the island. It was manufactured to replace aging JNR era commuter trains and often operated coupled to other JR Kyushu commuter train types. The connecting front door was intended for allowing passengers to pass through when coupled to other units, unlike the 811 series which allowed for emergency use only. The earlier batches of the 813 series was produced as 2 car sets, a middle car was later added to all trains. Production continued after the 815 and 817 series entered service in the 2000s, and the total number of cars manufactured is 254. Operationally, it is placed on the Kagoshima Main Line in greater Fukuoka, the Nippō Main Line in Kitakyushu's suburbs, and the eastern section of the Nagasaki Main Line. Trains during busier hours can reach up to 9 cars, while daytime runs are often just 3 cars. In 2023 JR Kyushu began converting 813 series sets to long seating to improve capacity, with the first modified sets entering service the same year, all units will be converted by FY2028.

-For simplicity the cross seating cars are labelled as the 1000 series and the long seating cars the 2200 series. However there are a large variety of vehicle numbers in this type, and the long seating cars have the original car numbers added 2200 or 3000.
