A turbolaser was a powerful variant of the laser cannon turret usually installed aboard capital ships as well as space stations.[2] While their firepower made them very capable against other capital ships, turbolasers were less effective against smaller and more nimble starfighters.

The DBY-827 was the standard requirement in naval gunnery around the time of the Clone Wars for inter-ship combat and planetary bombardment. Each turret was mounted with powerful tracking sensors as well as a large power capacitor which quickly discharged energy to the guns. Venator-class Star Destroyers had eight DBY-827s, four on either side of the bridge area. They were the main source of firepower on the ship.
