Yokohama Municipal Subway 3000 Series / 横浜市交通局3000形

The 3000 Series (3000形) is a commuter EMU operated by Yokohama Municipal Subway.

Produced in various batches since 1992, the 3000 series is a third rail powered vehicle in service on the Blue Line. The different batches have notable differences in appearance but only minor changes in equipment and specifications. The 1st cars labelled as the 3000A series was introduced as the Shin-Yokohama to Azamino section opened, with 8 sets of 6 cars produced. 7 sets of the 3000N type entered service in 1999 following another extension to the line, these have different electrical equipment which reduced costs per car by 15%. The 3000R series was made to replace the 1000 series, with 14 sets produced between 2004-2005. From this type onwards the vehicles were installed with improved fire resistance and barrier free access to all cars. in 2005 Yokohama Subway decided to retire the 2000 series as they were incompatible with one man operation, with much of the equipment recycled into the 8 3000S series trains as they were in good condition. The final 3000V batch was made in 2017 with just 1 set, it was meant to serve as an additional vehicle as the earlier variants were due for renewal works. However, the operator calculated that the cost of renewal would be too high and decided to gradually scrap them instead. The total number of vehicles is 228 cars. As of current, 7 formations have been scrapped, which are 4 3000A sets, 2 3000S sets, and 1 3000N set. All 3000A sets will be removed in the next year, while the 3000N and 3000S cars are scheduled for retirement by FY2030. There have been no announcements regarding the 3000R sets.
