JR West 273 Series / JR西日本273系

The 273 Series (273系) is a Limited Express type EMU operated by JR West.

Designed as the replacement for the 381 series on limited express Yakumo, the 273 series entered service on April 4th, 2024. It inherited the high cab walk-through front car design of the 287 series, and has tilting capabilities to improve speeds on the mountainous Hakubi Line. The base formation is 4 cars adopting the 0.5M design, although compared to the 4 car 381 series sets the capacity is reduced by around 15%. The seat pitch on standard cars matches those on the Shinkansen, and the amount of space per seat is the highest of all limited express vehicles. In addition to standard and green seats, there are also semi-compartment seats with wooden tables and cushions that can be unfolded outwards to create a flat surface for passengers. The third car in the formation has a multipurpose room and 2 small private compartments that can be used by all passengers for refreshing themselves before arrival. The vehicles' exterior is painted with a livery unique to Yakumo. A total of 44 cars have been ordered, they are projected to phase out the 381 series by June 15th, 2024. Operations typically consists of 4 cars, sometimes 8 cars during busier seasons.
