Development of the KV-2 began in 1939. Defense Commissar Kliment Voroshilov wanted a tank capable of destroying German fortifications and resisting German heavy tanks, the KV-2 was developed from the KV-1 inJanuary 1940. The KV-1 is fitted with an M-10 152 mm howitzer cannon, integrated into a much taller turret, to form the KV-2, which will be built at the Kirov factory in Leningrad . This heavily armored tank, less mobile than the KV-1, remained effective as artillery support against heavy German tanks. During the first days of the German invasion, only one of these KV-2s was able to resist several Panzerjäger Is for two days before being destroyed by a German hand-thrown grenade into a hatch.

A total of 334 vehicles were manufactured from 1940 to 1941. KV-2 tanks were used in action in 1941, most of the vehicles were lost in the same year. Tanks captured by the Germans were reused and renamed Panzerkampfwagen KV-II 754 1 .
