Keihan 2200 Series / 京阪2200系

The 2200 Series (2200系) is a commuter EMU operated by Keihan Electric Railway.

In operation since 1964, the 2200 series is the oldest type on the Keihan network. It follows the 'egg-shaped' design first adopted by the 2000 series in 1959. Developed as an express train to increase capacity and reduce travel times along the line, it was constructed during a period of rapid economic and population growth. Compared to pre-war vehicles still in service at the type, the 2200 series increased the number of doors per side to three, and adopted a longer body to relief congestion. As the Keihan Main Line increasingly shifted towards commuter services, long seats are used in all cars. The type was produced as 4, 5, and 6 car sets, with several rounds of rearrangements being carried out in the decade after introduction. It operated mostly as 7 car sets as the 600V DC electrification limited the length of formations. After the voltage was increased to 1500V DC in the late 1970s, an extra intermediate car was manufactured for each set to bring consists up to 8 cars. Thus, the total number of vehicles constructed is 103 cars. All sets had air conditioning systems installed during the voltage modification works. Scrapping of the 2200 series have been in progress since 2007 at a slow pace, starting with the additional cars manufactured in 1985. Currently, there are 28 cars left in service in 4 sets of 7 cars.
