描述
The 213 Series (213系) is a suburban type EMU operated by JR Central and JR West.

Based on the earlier 211 Series, the 213 Series was the last type to be introduced by JNR prior to privatization. The three door per side layout of the 211 series was changed to 2 doors per side, as the type was intended to serve on lines without a higher proportion of longer distance travellers and less commuters. It is divided into 2 variants: the 0 series was introduced to the Okayama area in JR West's jurisdiction, and the 5000 series for JR Central's Kansai Main Line. The interior layout is fully composed of cross seats for the 0 series, while the 5000 series has a semi-cross layout with long seats at the ends of each vehicle. JR West formally operated panoramic green cars as the KuRo 212 type, formations including the car were used on the Seto-Ōhashi Line linking Shikoku with the rest of Japan. A total of 65 cars were manufactured, with production continued by the two JR companies after the division of JNR. Operations with panoramic cars ended in 2010, and they were scrapped. The former 3-car sets were thus converted to 2-car sets with the middle car modified with driving cabs and operating equipment. The 3-car sets that did not have panoramic cars remained. All of JR Central's vehicles are configured in 2-car sets, they were moved from the Nagoya area to the Iida Line in 2012, and were modified to add wheelchair spaces and accessible toilets. Presently, JR West's formations operate on the Ako, Hakubi, Uno, and San'yō Main Lines in and around Okayama prefecture, they also run on the Seto-Ōhashi Line on the JR West side, but no longer cross into Shikoku. JR Central's sets operate on the Iida Line, it has been announced that they will be replaced by the 315 Series in the next few years. 57 cars remain in service per the latest data.
