出云号是日本六六舰队计划的一部分，用甲午战争的赔款从英国购入。出云号参加了日俄战争，有活跃表现。之后作为训练舰。在二战期间出云号作为日本在中国的主力舰，参加了淞沪会战。该舰最著名的照片即在当时拍摄：1937年出云号停泊在黄浦江上，背景是上海的外滩建筑群。出云号最终被美军飞机击沉。

The Izumo is part of the Japanese naval plan of "Double Six"(is this really the correct translation ?), and is bought from Britain using the compensations of the Sino-Japanese war. Izumo had active service during the Russo-Japanese war, and was later used as training ship. She became the flagship of the Japanese fleet invading China in WW2 and took part in the battle of Shanghai. It is that period when the most famous photo of the ship was shot: The Izumo anchoring in the Huangpu River with the Bund behind her. She was later sunk by American planes.
