JR East E261 Series / JR東日本E261系

The E261 Series (E261系) is an EMU of JR East operating as Limited Express Saphir Odoriko.

The scenic Izu Peninsular had long attracted tourists to it's beautiful coastline, sandy beaches and abundant hot springs. Lying just 100 kilometers south of Tokyo and part of the greater Fuji-Hazone-Izu National Park, the area is well-connected by rail and popular as a weekend getaway. In 2020, JR East launched the luxury excursion train Saphir Odoriko operated by the newly built and specifically designed E261 series. The 8-car service is consisted entirely of high-end seating solutions, with the leading vehicle being the first premium green car in service. These sets offer excellent space and legroom at just 2 per row, and include the ability to turn facing the windows. Private compartments decorated with luxurious wood interiors are located on cars 2 and 3, and the cafeteria and restaurant car makes up the middle of the consist in car 4. Standard green cars make up the rest of the formation, these feature a 2+1 layout instead of the 2+2 of other green car products and the seats are based on those found on the E5 Shinkansen, ensuring a high level of comfort. 2 sets were produced in 2019 totalling 16 cars, they operate 1-3 return trips from Tokyo/Shinjuku to Shimoda Station.
