JR East 701 Series / JR東日本701系

The 701 Series (701系) is an EMU operated by JR East in the Tōhoku region.

The electrified main lines of the Tōhoku region still saw locomotive hauled passenger cars on local services well into the 1990s, and converted former express trains were used in urban regions such as Sendai. Locomotive ran services were costly and shunting operations proved time and labor intensive, while the 2 door per side layout of the express cars hindered efficiency on commuter services. JR East subsequently introduced the 701 series in 1993 as a standard type EMU for the entire region. The type was produced as 2,3 or 4 car sets, capable of coupling into formations of varying lengths. All units featured air conditioning and the 2 car sets supported one-man operation. Standard gauge variants were manufactured from 1996-1999 for the re-gauged portions of the Ōu Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen) and the Tazawako Line (Akita Shinkansen). The third sector companies Iwate Galaxy Railway and Aoimori Railway which operated parts of the former JR Tōhoku Main Line had also ordered some new sets after their inception, these are known as the IGR7000 series and the Aoimori 701 series respectively. In total 266 cars were manufactured, and as of current all except 1 accident damaged set remains in service.
