The Genesis-Class, first seeing production in 2180, would go on in the KRAC star group to be used for exploratory expeditions as well as industrial workhorsing during the construction of asteroid bases and jump gates. Being able to carry construction shuttles and materials easily landed it the job without much competition, as the Endeavor took a lot longer with its smaller hangar gate to retrieve and launch shuttles.

With its original purpose slowly diminishing in quantity during the 2200s, Lagrange sought to give new life to the aging frames by strapping on prototype nacelles, refurbishing the shuttle bay to use military fighters, replacing the ancient single-dish navigational deflector with a newer active deflector array, and fitting an overclocked prototype shield module for field testing in deep space before the system would go on to be prototyped on naval ships.

Due to all of its experimental equipment, few civilian investors would purchase the full upgrade while the UCSN would purchase several dozen newly-produced refits to get an edge on their rivals in the colony war going on at the time. The weapons may have been relatively old, but being able to pop up, launch a full volley of modern torpedoes, and retreat without taking structural damage due to the shields would prove to be invaluable for interdictions on critical supply facilities of the other factions.
