Before Europeans arrived in Michigan, Michigan was home to various Native American tribes. Most of the settlements of these tribes were not permanent and were most often located along river valleys. The inhabitants of these regions were very mobile and actively used rivers and lakes to transport various raw materials. They also paved new roads that would eventually be used by Europeans, and then in their place would be built the highways that currently criss-cross the entire state.

The first Europeans to enter Michigan were French explorers led by Etienne Brulé in 1621. The goal of their expedition was to find the legendary “northwest passage” to the East. The first permanent European settlement was founded by French missionary Jacques Marquette in 1668. During the time of French patronage, the indigenous inhabitants were not touched, but on the contrary, they were supported.

Everything changed in 1760, when, following a lost war, the French one was replaced by a British protectorate. The British treated the locals very rudely and oppressed them in every possible way, which prompted the indigenous people to revolt and fight against the European guests. For the first time, the British officer Edward Bland founded his settlement on the territory of present-day Dobrograd, who in 1761 began to build his personal estate. But construction was interrupted due to the outbreak of the Pontiac Rebellion, which swept the entire state. It went with varying degrees of success, but the American Revolution that began in 1765 only added fuel to the fire, and already in 1796 the territory of Michigan was completely transferred to the United States of America.
