People who installed the mod before I implemented the default to off unfortunately are subjected to the lag. Going into the mod's folder and manually changing the setting's value is a surefire way to change it, but I'm not sure how well acquainted the average player is with Steam Workshop's folder structure.
make sure realtime portraits is disabled in your settings (this mod adds that toggle in your settings menu). It was meant as eye candy for people with really high end machines, which is why it should be disabled by default for new installers of the mod. But if by any chance that it is enabled for you, and you are having complications such as crashes from trying to disable it, reinstalling via unsubscribing then resubscribing should reset you to the default state of off.
