SS France (1910)

Here is the SS France of Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (French Line)!

She was the only four funneled liner to be built in France, and was made in response to the British and German four funneled liners. France was not the largest or fastest ship ever built, but she was the greatest achievement in French ship design at the time (as well as the largest ship in France). France did not gain much popularity at first, as she completed her maiden voyage just 5 days after the sinking of the Titanic. As time went on, her popularity grew, and helped improve the French Line's image on the Atlantic. While she was not known for her size or speed, she was known for her beautiful and comfortable interiors, which helped her own the nickname "Versailles of the Atlantic". When World War 1 broke out, she was first requisitioned by the French Navy as an auxiliary cruiser before being converted into a hospital ship. She participated in the Dardanelles campaign before being converted to carry American troops to Europe once the United States entered war. In 1918, just before the war was over, she suffered an engine explosion that killed a few crew members, ending her war service. She was repaired and put back into passenger service in 1920, however her flagship title was taken from her by her successor SS Paris. She continued to be a very popular ship alongside Paris, helping bring the French Line into the 1920s. In 1927 when the SS Ile de France was completed, France was instead used for cruising, but this didn't last long due to passenger numbers dropping during the Great Depression. She was laid up in 1933 and was finally scrapped at Dunkirk in 1935 upon the introduction of the SS Normandie.
