法国海军下一代17英寸级主炮，被认为是高速重弹路线的终点之一。这种火炮的设计目标是，在17英寸的口径下达到不低于18英寸的射程、穿深和毁伤，多出的空间则可用于提升投射量。这一点也是法国海军的特色。该型武器系统的服役，标志着法国海军从此进入“后16英寸”时代，超过意大利，进入海军发展第一梯队。

406mm Mle 1939 and 431mm Mle 1940, each main gun comes in three versions: dual, triple, and quadruple.

406mm Mle 1939

The main gun of the Alsace class battleship's "medium" plan (Plan 2) is a 50 caliber 406mm main gun with high-speed heavy ammunition. Unlike Schneider's high-speed light ammunition artillery developed for the Soviet Red Navy, this type of main gun perfectly inherits the fine tradition of high-speed heavy ammunition from the French Navy. Its 2300 pound AP OPfK Mle 1939 can penetrate thick armor over long distances and cause considerable damage.

431mm Mle 1940

The next generation of the 17 inch main gun of the French Navy is considered one of the endpoints of high-speed heavy ammunition routes. The design goal of this artillery is to achieve a range, penetration depth, and damage of no less than 18 inches at a 17 inch caliber, with the additional space available for increased projection. This is also a characteristic of the French Navy. The service of this type of weapon system marks the entry of the French Navy into the "post 16 inch" era, surpassing Italy and entering the first tier of naval development.
