A better protected supply point. If enemies are nearby the obelisk will activate and soldiers will spawn. If enemy infantry stick too long around an active depot something else will spawn as well...

As long as the obelisk is functional enemy units will keep spawning. However if you want to stop enemy transports from cycling through the depot you will have to make your way into the small building and shut down the depot with the press of a button. This will also destroy the obelisk if you haven't already.
