JR-Freight KoKi 73 container wagon

The KoKi 73 is a low-floor container wagon of JR Freight introduced in 2016. The floor height is 740 mm, lower than the 1,000 mm of the KoKi 100 series, so that hi-cube containers of 9 ft 6 in (2,896 mm) height can be carried even in tunnels with small openings. It can also carry 20ft and 31ft containers.

JR Freight could carry ISO high cube containers on the KoKi 100 series on the Tohoku Main Line, but on many lines, such as the Tokaido Main Line and the Joetsu Line, they could only carry containers up to standard height. The concept is similar to the KoKi 72 prototype built in 1996.

As of 2023, only four KoKi 73s were still produced. However, momentum is building for a shift to rail freight due to the implementation of Japanese truck driver overtime regulations in 2024.

There are two variations of this mod that carry a variety of containers, including 40ft and 20ft, and a variation that only carries ISO 40ft high cubes. No crude, oil, or fuel will be loaded in the ISO 40ft high cube variant.
