These refits sacrifice some firepower for their science capabilities but that extra power has to go somewhere and the brilliant minds assigned to these vessels have use the excess power to overcharge the engines and shields. They may even have found enough extra juice to boost the weapons a tiny but as well.

The ships all have an extra component slot - Survey Refit which adds some modifiers to make them more survivable should they happen accross hostile forces. All ship variants will be unlocked by researching the corresponding tech.

The ships when built are single ship fleets just like the hero ships.
