SS America

Here is the SS America and all of her refits.

Completed in 1940 for the United States Lines and designed by the noted American naval architect William Francis Gibbs, she the largest passenger ship built in the United States at the time. In 1941, she was handed to the US Navy to be converted into the troopship USS West Point, and participated in several WW2 operations when the United States joined later that year. After the war, she returned to passenger service with United States Lines, sailing along side the company's newest ship the SS United States. In 1964, America was sold to the Chandris Line and renamed Australis, becoming the company's flagship. She was sold again in 1978 to an American company called Venture Cruise Line, which renamed her back to America. However, her career with Venture Cruise line was short lived as the company declared bankruptcy due to complaints about the ship being poorly maintained. She was again sold to Chandris Line that same year and renamed Italis and had her first funnel removed. A few years later she was laid up in Piraeus with her future uncertain. She was sold in 1980 to Intercommerce Cooperation to be converted into the prison ship Noga, and was sold again in 1984 to Silver Moon Cruises as Alferdoss, but none of these ever can to fruition. In 1992, she was finally sold to be a hotel ship in Thailand and renamed to American Star. Her voyage to Thailand began in 1993, but while under tow, the ship and its tug Neftegaz-67, were caught in a huge storm that broke the tow line. American Star drifted away, and grounded off Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. The strong waves pushing the ship broke her in 2, and she was declared a total loss. The stern section collapsed, but the bow remained above water for a few years until it finally collapsed in 2008.
