Type 97 Chi-Ha (OBSOLETE)

The second most common tank in the Imperial Japanese Army service, Type 97 Chi-Ha was developed as a replacement for the previous medium tank of the IJA, the Type 89 I-Go. Armed with the same 57mm low-velocity cannon, it features improved mobility and armor protectioon over its predecessor.

While it was adequate for mid-1930s design and proved to be particularly effective against poorly armed National Revolutionary Army of the Republic of China, the first confrontation with the Soviet Army during the Battle of Khalkhin-Gol had revealed the problems of the low-velocity main gun, as similarly or weaker armored Soviet tanks often outranged the Japanese ones. This revelation had led to the development of a more effective long barreled 47mm gun, which was implemented on mass scale only after the beginning of the war in the Pacific war theatre.

Due to the circumstances of the Pacific war, Japanese tank development was not given a very high priority, which resulted in Chi-Ha tanks and their upgunned versions still being one of the most commonly seen tanks on the frontline as late as 1945, with more advanced designs being reserved for the defense against the potential Allied invasion.

A total of 1,162 of base variant Chi-Ha tanks were produced from 1938 to 1942.
