SS Deutschland

Here is the SS Deutschland of the Hamburg America Line.

She was built in response to Norddeutscher Lloyd's SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. She was larger than Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, but was not large enough to be the largest ship in the world. She was also faster than her rival, which would help her capture the Blue Riband on her maiden voyage. However, the ship suffered vibration issues at top speed, which made her a bit unpopular. The issue was fixed in 1907, but it was too late as the RMS Lusitania captured the Blue Riband from her that year. In 1902, Deutschland was involved in an incident with Prince Henry of Prussia after Marconi radio stations refused to accept his telegram from the ship's Slaby-d'Arco wireless system. This incident was a major event in the history of wireless communication, as Marconi now allowed to give their access to other wireless transmissions. Later that year she encountered rough storm that destroyed her rudder, and had to use her propellers to turn until she reached Bremerhaven, where her captain died of a heart attack and the stress during the voyage. In 1910, Deutschland was pulled from transatlantic service and was converted into a cruise ship and renamed Victoria Luise. She proved to be a very popular ship, but her cruising career was cut short due to the outbreak of World War 1. She was planned for conversion into an auxiliary cruiser, but engine problems and a fire that broke out during her conversion, cancelled the plans, and she sat idle for the entire duration of the war. After the war, she was refitted, renamed "Hansa", and served as an emigrant ship. However, due to new immigration laws passed in the United States, she started becoming very unprofitable, and was sold for scrap in 1925.
