Some quick tips: If the "Custom Sonar" setting is enabled, Real Sonar will automatically [imgur.com] add patched terminals to the config on the next ping.
Adding Real Sonar-patched terminals to the config is not necessary because the creators of these patches have already implemented the core functionality themselves. However, it does unlock the following two benefits:
1. Bots will have sonar-related intelligence and avoid hull breaches when the sonar is on without an anechoic item.
2. The terminal can be customized using the parameters in the newly added config line.
(The "damage" and "range" parameters are still multiplied by their respective sliders)
You might ask, why bother using patches like this at all anymore? There's one element of Real Sonar that can't be added to terminals via config alone, and that's the UI. This means if you just add terminals to the config without a patch, they'll still have the default look.
