9. Defence of Arnhem Bridge [Mission]

On Monday 18th, the Germans launched a massive assault on Frost's few hundred men around the bridge. It was annihilated. This was a massive victory for the British, although they used up the vast majority of their ammunition: to continue holding the bridge, the rest of 1st Airborne would need to break through to them and resupply them. This was attempted Tuesday morning.

Frost and his men listened to the distant gunfire, sure their comrades were about to reach them. At one point, the British pushed so far that Frost could even make out the Airborne battle cry of "Woah Mohammet!" amid the gunfire. As morning wore on, the gunfire continued but the cries died away. Help was not coming.

'Black Tuesday' saw Frost slowly lose control of the Eastern side of his pocket. Sappers, occupying a school building, combated fires and German attacks; the school was the first building to fall. Over the next two days, Frost's men engaged in desperate house to house fighting, a struggle so brutal and bloody that even many German Eastern Front Veterans were horrified by the conditions. With little ammunition left, the British defence began to fall apart. Frost was injured himself on the 20th; he joined the hundreds of wounded men being kept in the basements of the few remaining houses.

House by house was destroyed by German artillery and overrun.
The Brits knew they had only hours left.
XXX Corps should have arrived two days ago.

The morning of the 21st dawned on the few remaining defenders of Arnhem Bridge. Until the last second, they carried on hoping to hear the roar of XXX Corp's engines. To the last second, they expected British tanks to appear as their rescue. The tanks never arrived. The Battalion surrendered on the 21st. Despite holding out against all the odds, XXX Corps had not arrived to save them.

Arnhem Bridge fell to the Germans.
Operation Market Garden had failed.
