5. Black Tuesday [Mission]

On the 18th, 1st Airborne's General Urquhart went forward to see what was going on in Arnhem since the radios weren't working. What he found was that whilst Johnny Frost had reached the bridge, the other Battalions were blocked by the Germans at a bottleneck in the roads. Urquhart suddenly found himself in the thick of the action (at one point possibly shooting a German with his pistol) and cut off from the rest of 1st Airborne, so spent the night hiding in the attic of a Dutch house. In his absence, the Battalion commanders decided to make their own attempts to reach Frost at the bridge, who was by now running dangerously short of ammunition after annihilating a German counterattack the previous day.
Tuesday 19th became known as Black Tuesday due to the horrific British losses. Before sunrise, one Battalion attempting to reach Frost had been eviscerated, and another was quickly bogged down in house to house fighting and slowly torn to shreds. There was also heavy fighting north of Oosterbeek in the local woods, and at the Bridge Frost's defensive perimeter began to shrink. Things were looking dire at Arnhem: they could not hold out much longer.
