(8) Hill 209

Ras el Medauuar dominates the southwest of Tobruk's defensive perimeter at 209 meters above sea level. Despite its gentle grade, control of the hill's summit is pivotal in Tobruk's fate. Hastily re-fortified by the defending Commonwealth forces, minefields, anti-tank ditches, and emplacements laid down by the Italians have proven useful for their new occupants. The Afrika Korps has failed to breakthrough the line thus far, but the minefields have been partially cleared, ditches partially filled, and emplacements only half-smashed.

Failure for the Allied forces at Hill 209 would allow for Rommel to exploit the breakthrough and "roll up" large sections of the perimeter adjacent or breakthrough towards Tobruk itself and allow the Afrika Korps to continue their drive towards the Nile unimpeded. Failure for the Axis forces would force thousands of soldiers to stay in Libya's desert instead of pressing on to Egypt and prevent Tobruk's use to resupply the already thinly-stretched line of supply.
